Issues requiring immediate attention
1. Offices are not connected
2. Anti-virus
3. Absence of Adware / Spyware & SPAM filter
4. Unit 305 is using a 24-port 10/100Mbps Hub
5. File Server status unknown
6. Insufficient Memory

Issue : Offices are not connected
Unit 305 & Unit 1801 are not connected. Your company is double-paying for the broadband services provided by Hong Kong Broadband for both offices in the same building. That's a re-occurring cost, which can & should be minimized.
Recommendation
SoS was informed by Seapower that Seapower Centre has a conduit provided to tenants. SoS recommends SeaPower to link up the two offices by optical fiber or UTP (Unshield Twisted Pair) Cat5e cable if the distance from Unit 305-1801 is under 350 ft.

Issue : Anti-virus
SoS noticed a presence of a File Server, but the client PCs are not being managed by the server, especially the anti-virus program. SoS also noticed that the client PCs are running various anti-virus software, including NAV 2001 & PCillin.
Recommendation
Standardized on NAV 2004 or Trend Micro Internet Security.

Issue : Absence of Adware / Spyware & SPAM filter
SoS noticed that client PCs have no Adware / Spyware, & SPAM filter installed.
Recommendation
Standardize on NAV 2004 or Trend Micro Internet Security.

Issue : Unit 305 is using a 24-port 10/100Mbps Hub
SoS noticed Unit 305 is using a 24-port 10/100Mbps hub instead of a switch. Hubs are very dumb network devices. They allow all devices that are connected to it to communicate to each other. It makes no decisions about traffic direction & it doesn't inspect traffic quality or verify traffic integrity. All network data it receives on one port will be immediately transmitted out all the other ports, so each computer must take its turn before sending data. This is called half-duplex, it is very inefficient.

A switch can be considered a 'smart' hub. It will actively look at the traffic it receives and based on the destination address it will direct that traffic only to the port needed. The switch listens to each port at the same time without any interference. A computer plugged directly into the switch will not receive unnecessary traffic and can transmit to the switch whenever it needs to, this leaves all the bandwidth available to each machine.
Recommendation
Replace the hub with a switch.

Issue : File Server status unknown
SoS noticed the so-called file server was located in the conference room w/ the monitor power cord half-way plugged in.
Recommendation
A file server should be positioned on a table or computer rack.

Issue : Insufficient Memory
SoS noticed the majority of the client PCs only has 128MB RAM installed. The client PCs have either Win98 or WinME installed. The integrated graphics card is using 16MB memory.
Recommendation
SoS recommends to upgrade client PCs to 256MB.
